AL MAKASSED CHARITABLE HOSPITAL
Jerusalem, Palestine
Al-Makassed Hospital is a charitable institution offering medical services to all Palestinian citizens in the West Bank and Gaza. It is also one of the last remaining Palestinian institutional symbols in East Jerusalem. The hospital’s dedicated 675+ staff treats tens of thousands of people throughout Palestine and trains over 100 new doctors every year.
The Hospital is the main referral and teaching hospital in Palestine, providing advanced care in many specialties including Emergency, Neo-natal & Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Cardiac & Pulmonary Medicine/Surgery among others.
Located on the beautiful Mount of Olives and overlooking the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock and the Church of Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem, Al-Makassed faces a unique set of challenges. Israeli measures in East Jerusalem (which is internationally and legally recognised as an integral part of Palestine but which is currently under occupation by Israel) are making life incredibly difficult for the Muslim and Christian population of Palestine and for those institutions looking after the people, attempting to fulfil their most basic human rights.
Israeli measures threatening the hospital include: Control of costs and referral of Palestinian patients, imposition of high municipal and income taxes, prohibition of the use of relatively cheaper Palestinian pharmaceuticals produced elsewhere in the West Bank, and the imposition of severe movement and access restrictions on patients and staff.
The hospital is currently facing a severe financial crisis which is limiting its ability to provide health and humanitarian services and endangering the very future of the hospital. This is why we need your help.
